AC Condenser Function
In general, in heavy equipment and light vehicles, the AC function makes the cabin of heavy equipment and cars cooler and cooler when the weather is hot. AC (air conditioning) is a system consisting of components, one of which is a condenser.
What exactly is an AC condenser ?
A condenser is a device in the AC system of heavy equipment or cars that is used to condense or convert high-pressure gas (refrigerant) into liquid. This liquid then flows to the receiver dryer and continues on to the expansion valve.
The function of an AC condenser - In heavy equipment and cars with air conditioning (AC), the AC condenser converts compressed refrigerant gas at high temperatures and pressures into liquid refrigerant. This is done by blowing outside air into the heat exchanger using an electric fan.
In an air conditioning system, the function of the AC condenser is to take the high-temperature, high-pressure refrigerant that has been compressed in the compressor, force it to release its heat to the outside air using a cooling fan, and, through the condensation process, convert the refrigerant gas into liquid refrigerant.
The function of an AC condenser is very important in an air conditioning system. In an AC condenser, the amount of heat emitted from the refrigerant gas depends on the amount of heat absorbed from the air in the room by the evaporator and the work done to compress the gas in the compressor.
Another function of an AC condenser is to remove heat. Heat removal occurs when the refrigerant changes from a gas to a liquid. The refrigerant itself initially comes from the AC compressor supply.
The AC condenser is connected to the cooling fan.
In an air conditioning system, the effect of heat radiation on the cooling effect of the cabin is equal to the cooling airflow produced by two special cooling fans, with an additional cooling fan for the engine radiator. An independent AC (Air Conditioning) condenser helps prevent engine overheating and does not affect engine performance.
AC Condenser Fan Motor Stage Control
In an air conditioning (AC) system, the AC condenser electric fan motor is controlled at two speeds by the refrigerant pressure on the high pressure side. If the refrigerant pressure on the high pressure side rises above 18 kg/cm², the pressure switch will turn ON and electric current will flow, causing the electric fan motor to rotate at high RPM.
When the refrigerant pressure on the high-pressure side drops below 14 kg/cm², the pressure switch will turn OFF and the pressure will reduce the voltage to slow down the rotation of the electric fan motor. This will increase the motor's lifespan and avoid unnecessary electrical current usage. The refrigerant pressure depends on the unit specifications; the pressure above is only an example.
Air Conditioning Condenser Maintenance
To maintain the performance of the air conditioning system, periodic maintenance will be carried out, one of which is air conditioning condenser maintenance. Ensure that the air conditioning condenser does not leak, and also clean the air conditioning condenser with pressurized water. Ensure that the condenser mounting is tight, as loosening can cause damage to the air conditioning condenser.
AC Condenser Materials
Heavy equipment and older vehicles still use copper condenser materials with a pipe design. Over time, condenser materials have shifted to aluminum with fewer and larger holes.
Even heavy equipment and light vehicles manufactured from 2001 onwards use aluminum condenser materials exclusively, with very small refrigerant pathways.
Lifetime or Service Life of an AC Condenser
The actual lifetime or service life depends on the material of the heavy equipment condenser and the brand of the unit. For heavy equipment and certain car AC condensers, the lifetime can be up to three years if they are well maintained. There are even AC condensers with a shorter lifetime.
As for maintaining the AC condenser, you can do it yourself, but there are times when it must be taken to a workshop or official dealer.
Common Problems with Air Conditioner Condensers
1. Insufficient cooling in the air conditioning system. This problem usually occurs due to dust and road dirt sticking to the air conditioner condenser.
2. Leaking AC condenser. Leaks in the AC condenser occur due to the condenser's lifespan. Even if the condenser is old, it does not necessarily mean that it will corrode and leak because it is made of aluminum. Leaks in the AC condenser usually occur due to impact or accident with a hard object.
3. The position of the AC condenser. If the AC condenser cooling uses one fan or two fans, but both fans are positioned behind the radiator, the distance between the AC condenser and the radiator should not be too far or too close. The goal is to maximize the cooling of the AC condenser.
4. Clogged AC condenser. This usually occurs in vehicles that are more than 5 years old. The clogging of the AC condenser is caused by wear and tear on the AC compressor, which forms black crust that can be seen from the sight glass receiver dryer.
