Tire Construction on Heavy Equipment

Tire Construction on Heavy Equipment

Everyone is familiar with tires. Tires are the most prominent component on heavy equipment due to their crucial function. They are designed for easy handling and to absorb small vibrations from the road surface.

Therefore, although tires may look like just a roll of rubber, if we dissect their construction, they consist of various components, as shown below.

Tire Construction on Heavy Equipment Dump Truck

In the construction of tires for heavy equipment, such as dump trucks, wheel loaders, or other heavy equipment, tire construction begins with a loop of metal cord that forms the base for each tire bead. The tire bead is the area that contacts the rim and must form an airtight seal with it.

The sidewalls are the area between the tread and bead areas. The several layers, or plies, of material that form the base for the tire from bead to bead are called the carcass or casing in the image above.

With radial tires, these plies run at 90 degrees to the tread, which gives the tire sidewalls more flexibility and results in a smoother ride and a larger contact patch. In bias-ply tires, the plies run at an angle to the tread and sidewall.

In heavy equipment tire construction, manufacturers create plies from many different materials to give the tire distinct characteristics, such as higher strength, a smoother ride, or less rolling resistance. The inner tube of a tubeless tire is a smooth rubber layer that seals the air inside.

Before tubeless tires became the norm, the inner tube sealed the air and created a separate bleeder inside the tire. The industry rates tires according to the number of plies they have. Generally, the more plies a tire has, the stronger it is. Ply ratings for heavy equipment tires range from 12 to 78. Some tire manufacturers use star ratings to indicate the strength of radial tire carcasses.

Heavy equipment tires are expensive, so careful attention must be paid to maintenance, such as tire pressure. Dump truck tires can be nearly 4 meters in diameter.
